Victorians are being asked to urgently check on the welfare of their pets as Melbourne’s windstorm has bought a massive increase in lost animals at The Lost Dogs’ Home overnight.
Animal ambulance drivers worked around the clock to bring in 16 dogs and cats that had found themselves displaced overnight.
The Home’s spokesperson Suzana Talevski said that was an increase of about 400 per cent!
“We expect that number to climb today as more dogs and cats are found throughout the day,’’ said Ms Talevski. ‘’These animals are scared and confused so we will be doing everything we can, as we always do, to reunite them with their families.’’
‘’We ask everyone out there to please check on your pets and check your properties and surroundings for pets that may have escaped because of wind damage to residences.’’
Ms Talevski said where possible animals should be kept indoors in wild weather.
“This is especially important for dogs that are prone to anxiety. It can be an extremely stressful time for your pets,’’ she said.
“If they are frightened, reassure them and remain calm. Pets should be provided the same cover as humans during severe weather.’’
The Home is also asking the community to be patient when attempting to access our Lost and Found services today.
“We are working around the clock to make sure we get as many animals home as quick as possible. This is also a good reminder to make sure your pet is microchipped. It’s the best and most effective tool we have to making sure these very important reunions take place.’’
