New data released by Melbourne’s The Lost Dogs’ Home shows almost 14,000 animals spent time in our care in the year 2020/2021 while awaiting to be either re-homed or re-united with families.
The Home’s Adoptions team were kept busy with 15,000 applications for our animals as lockdown restrictions took hold once again.
The newly released Lost Dogs’ Home 2020-2021 Annual Report shows:
• More than 15,000 adoption applications were received this year.
• The shelter saw 2432 animals go into our Foster Care program, a 23% increase from last year
• 4758 animals were adopted in the past year
• 13,821 animals came into our care at the shelter
• 73% of lost dogs were reunited with their families.
• Women held the majority of executive positions in the organisation, with 83% of the workforce being female.
“The disruptions caused by lockdown restrictions this year did make our operations more difficult in some ways, but we did have the experience from 2020 to understand how to navigate those challenges,” spokesperson Suzana Talevski said.
“We are so grateful for the support of the community, who we understand were going through hardships of their own but still provided much needed help to the shelter,” she said.
The report also showed less dogs coming into the shelter during previous years.
‘’We had a 33% reduction in the number of dogs coming into our care, which is a great to see,” Ms Talevski said.
‘’What that means is a new and wider appreciation of what pets mean to families and people in our community. Being at home has reinvigorated the love we have for our furry family members and we hope that trend continues.’’
