Sasha....an extra special girl with a secret, but she's hoping it won't make you love her any less!
Sasha was surrendered into our care just over a month ago and was clearly well-loved in her previous home. Sasha was well socialised with dogs and adults, okay with apartment living and settled well being left alone for short periods.
Unfortunately, Sasha had severely fractured her left hind leg. Sasha has undergone surgeries to repair the fracture, but her energy levels and young age meant this was a difficult process.
This is where Sasha's secret comes in.....she has 3 legs! Our vets made the difficult but life-changing decision to amputate Sasha's left hind leg, as attempts to repair the fracture were not succeeding. Sasha has well and truly taken everything into her stride and is recovering well from her surgery.
As you can imagine, being in a shelter environment has been quite tough for Sasha. At the moment, Sasha is quite conflicted towards both people and dogs, and has been finding it hard to settle here. Because of her current condition, we would recommend that Sasha be the only dog in the household and go home with older children to assist with her recovery. With time and patience, we have no doubt that Sasha will flourish back into the social butterfly she was raised to be.
Border Collies are known for being not only incredibly intelligent but also extremely energetic and agile. While this can all be said about Sasha, she is still adjusting to doing all these things with 3 legs, and will need to find a patient family who is willing to support her during her recovery stage.
Sasha enjoys being surrounded by familiar people and her safe spaces. We would strongly recommend dedicating a room or a crate to provide Sasha with her own space to decompress and regulate her stress levels. We would also recommend that her family be home more often than not, for the next few weeks, to keep an eye on her during her recovery stage.
Sasha is a truly special girl, with a truly special story. Dogs like Sasha make us realise how resilient animals can be, and her new family will be so lucky to witness her resilience and grit every day!
If Sasha sounds like the girl for you, come on down to North Melbourne and meet her today. Please ensure the whole family is here to meet this wonderful girl!
