Pets still being surrendered despite new rental laws

July 20, 2020

New laws giving greater protection to renters with pets came into effect in March. In Victoria, renters can now keep a pet with written consent from their rental provider.

Despite this, some pet owners are still having to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their animals because they’re moving into rental accommodation. Our latest figures show 24 pets have been surrendered to The Lost Dogs’ Home for this reason since the new laws were put in place.

As an open-intake shelter, we’ll never turn away a pet in need, regardless of their breed, age or circumstances. Although this figure represents a decrease compared to the same time last year, it shows that some pet owners aren’t aware of the change in legislation. Watch our interview that aired on ABC TV highlighting this important change.
