At The Lost Dogs’ Home, we believe in the power of education to give pets and people the best chance of a happy and healthy life together. That’s why we’re proud to introduce our new Pets and People Program – an initiative designed to educate and inspire the next generation of responsible pet owners and animal lovers.
What is the Pets and People Program?
Pets and People is our new educational outreach program specifically designed for primary school children. Our mission is to instil a deep understanding of animal welfare, emphasise the importance of responsible pet ownership, and teach children how to safely interact with their furry friends. Our goal is not only to educate children, but also foster a compassionate and informed community that values the well-being of all animals.
Program Highlights
Interactive Presentations: Our team visits primary schools to deliver fun and informative presentations. These sessions are tailored to the students’ age group. Topics include:
- Proper Pet Care: Learn how to keep pets healthy and happy!
- Understanding Animal Behaviour: Discover how to read a pet’s body language and recognise signs of discomfort or fear.
- Safe Interaction with Dogs and Cats: Demonstrations on how to approach a new dog and what to do if a dog shows signs of aggression.
- Veterinary Check-Ups: A glimpse into what happens during a vet visit.
- The Importance of Microchipping and Desexing: Understanding why these practices are important for pet safety.
Hands-on Activities: Interactive activities reinforce the concepts introduced in our presentations. From role-playing exercises that teach empathy towards animals, to demonstrations on proper pet care techniques, children get a hands-on understanding of what it means to be a responsible pet owner.
Meet an Ambassador Dog: The highlight of the program is the opportunity for kids to meet our friendly ambassador dog! They’ll learn how to approach a dog safely, making the experience memorable.
Educational Materials: We provide a variety of educational resources for both students and teachers, ensuring the lessons learned during our visit have a lasting impact that goes beyond the classroom and into the home and community.
Follow-Up and Support: Education is an ongoing process. After our visit, we remain available to answer any questions and provide additional support and resources. We encourage schools to keep in touch and share their progress integrating animal welfare education into their curriculum.
