An update from Jodie, Buckley's foster carer
“It has been a hectic fortnight for Buckley: the media and public interest in him, undergoing surgery, plus the regular visits to the vets at the Home for ongoing treatment and observation. He certainly sleeps well at night!
His initial shyness and wariness of strangers and new situations is slowly disappearing as he gains confidence. He senses that no more harm will come to him and he is in safe hands, but of course it is going to take time before he is completely comfortable.
I am amazed at how quickly Buckley is growing. He was a tiny slip of a pup when he was rescued, but with all the food he eats it is hardly surprising that he has filled out.
My dog Sparky, who is in his twilight years, is the perfect ‘uncle’ to Buckley. Not much fazes Sparky, which is just as well; Buckley can be pretty full-on. Sparky has to cope with Buckley ambushing him and trying to chew on his ears and tail. In time, Buckley will learn good canine manners, but for now he is just doing what pups do.
He has a favourite spot in my backyard where he stretches out for a nap in the sun. Once he has caught up on his zzz’s, he explores the garden (by this, I mean he chews the flowers!) and carries his numerous toys from A to B. He keeps himself amused for hours!
I am slowly introducing some gentle puppy training into Buckley’s daily routine. He is learning to sit on command (he will do almost anything for a treat!) and come to his name. Overall, despite the terrible act inflicted on him, Buckley is a happy, mischievous puppy.”
Buckley will remain in Jodie’s care for the next two to three weeks, or until she is satisfied he is healthy enough to be adopted. We ask that you keep updated on Buckley’s progress via www.dogshome.com.
