Responsible pet owners come out in droves

Before taking on the huge responsibility of driving a car, you first have to sit for your licence, right? So doesn’t it make sense that before you take on the responsibility of adopting a new pet, you put your knowledge to the test?

It’s important to remember that your new pet needs regular exercise and ongoing socialisation. They must be registered with council and be wearing an identification tag. They may need regular grooming, obedience training, or vet treatment should they ever get sick or injured. Isn’t it better to be prepared with the knowledge of everything that comes with being a pet owner, rather than jumping behind the wheel, uninformed?

The Lost Dogs’ Home thinks so. Our staff try to ensure every new adoptive owner is aware of the commitment they are making prior to adopting, however for those needing a bit more information, we’ve created the Pet Licence, an online quiz which provides basic information about responsible pet ownership.

The point of the Pet Licence is to prompt potential owners into thinking about the costs associated with owning a pet, as well as the necessary commitment of obedience training, veterinary care, grooming and socialisation,” General Manager of The Lost Dogs’ Home Sue Conroy said.

As a result of disappointing adoption figures in the first week of school holidays – probably due to poor economic conditions – the Home decided to provide a little more incentive for people considering adoption by offering a half-price adoption fee for all cats, kittens, dogs and puppies in the past five days. Not wanting to encourage impulse purchases, however, everyone wanting to get the discount first needed to complete the Pet Licence.

The focus was on building people’s knowledge of responsible pet ownership,” Sue said. “We simply want to give people all the information, so they can make an informed decision, rather than purchasing a cat or dog on a whim and discovering later what a big responsibility it is.”

Adoptions skyrocketed under the special offer and an incredible 271 people sat the Pet Licence test over the course of the five days.

It’s wonderful that so many people are now fully aware of what it takes to be a good pet owner,” Sue said. “Unfortunately the Home sees many cases of irresponsible pet ownership, resulting in dumped, lost, mistreated or surrendered animals. By educating the community about responsible pet ownership issues, we hope to improve the overall welfare of companion animals in our society.”

The Pet Licence quiz takes about 20 minutes and consists of 25 questions. Owner handbooks are provided to help potential owners work through the test. In addition, hints are given until the person taking the test obtains 100%. Please visit www.petlicence.com.au for more information and to put yourself to the test!
