Shelter Manager Kate Kemp described her as a “very timid girl" but knew Lulu had great potential if she received the time and training she deserved.
Lulu received plenty of TLC while waiting for her owner to come forward to claim her, but they never did. After a week, Lulu’s confidence had grown and her sweet nature had won the hearts of the staff at the Campaspe Shelter.
After passing her assessment she was put up for adoption.
A few days later Kate and staff were happy to see Lulu adopted, however were very disappointed when she was returned after only a month.
“It wasn’t her fault she came back”, commented Kate.
All prospective adopters complete a questionnaire and are screened by staff to ensure they are choosing an appropriate dog for their situation. Kate made doubly sure the Maggio family were the right fit when they showed interest in lovely Lulu.
It turned out the Maggio family were perfect. “They were looking for a young staffy-type and saw Lulu’s photo on the website and fell in love,” said Kate.
“I took them through Lulu’s previous situation and made it clear that she required a lot of training as her previous owner hadn’t bothered. This didn’t put them off. When they came and met with Lulu she won their hearts straight away.”
The Maggio family have since been in touch with Kate to let her know just how their “beautiful girl Lulu” is getting on.
They report: “She loves playing tug of war, ball and jumping on the trampoline with my daughters and their friends. She loves to chase our cows but as soon as they turn around and look at her she runs away!”
I have taken her for walks down by the Patterson River (at the end of our street) which she absolutely loves. She has the most beautiful nature and misses my children when they are at school. She was DEFINITELY worth the drive to Echuca”.
“We look forward to starting some socialisation classes with her to meet other dogs”.
Nothing gives staff at The Lost Dogs’ Home greater pleasure than to see a dog like Lulu get a second chance in life and then receive such wonderful feedback. Kate says she “couldn’t have asked for a better outcome for Lulu, that’s for sure!”
