Longing for a new home

What has 171 legs and needs a new home? All 43 dogs up for adoption as of Saturday at North Melbourne’s Lost Dogs’ Home.

If you’re questioning our maths (“but dogs have four legs!”) there is a three legged dog, Elly, who would love to go home with someone too. “We would love to see every single one of these dogs adopted on Saturday and Sunday,” states Shelter Manager Sue Conroy. “We hope that people looking for a new family member will brave the cold and visit us and go home with a fantastic new pet.”
Adoption rates at the Home slow down during winter, despite the fact the Home sees an increase in the number of stray and dumped dogs coming in. “Every year we find that surrender rates spike in winter. Some owners don’t want to be outside when it’s cold or raining to walk their dog, so they sign it over to us. They hope that a “better” home will be found for the dog. We also see irresponsible owners not claiming their dog. It’s not unusual for the dog to have identification but the owner denies ownership when we contact them.” This weekend will see a range of dogs and puppies available to adopt. “There are dogs for everyone: older dogs looking for a warm lap, active dogs who’ll happily go jogging with you, small dogs who don’t need a lot of exercise…they all just need care, love and a happy new home.” said Ms Conroy. The Lost Dogs’ Home at North Melbourne is open from 9.00am to 3.30pm on Saturday and 9.00am to 12.30pm on Sunday. All dogs and pups are microchipped, vaccinated, desexed, wormed and heartworm tested. They also receive a free, post-adoption training session with Planet K9. In addition, dogs currently wearing a jumper or coat will get to take it to their new home.
