Keep Your Pets Safe on Australia Day

Following the high number of unclaimed dogs post New Year’s Eve, The Lost Dogs’ Home strongly urges owners to be vigilant about their pet’s safety this Australia Day, 26 January.

The first step is making sure pets are microchipped and wearing collar identification at all times. Of the 161 dogs admitted over the New Year, 83 were returned to their owners. Of the 78 that were not claimed, 49 were not wearing any form of identification and their owners could not be contacted.

The second step is ensuring all owner contact details are up to date with the register storing your pet’s microchip and ID tag records. Whilst some pets have microchips and ID, they become useless when owners do not ensure current contact information is lodged with their pet register. Phone the National Pet Register on 1300 734 738 for more information.

The third step is to keep pets safe during loud noises such as fireworks and thunderstorms. If pet owners are out for the evening, place pets inside. If owners go away on holidays, take pets with you or book them into credible boarding facilities.

Watch Sue Conroy, General Manager (Operations) on Channel 7 News talk about the hundreds of displaced dogs admitted on New Year’s Eve.
