Making a four-legged addition to the family is generally something most people ponder for a very long time, but not Jessie.
After finding a stray dog on her front lawn in late 2009, she thought it best to take it to The Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne. She knew the lost pooch would have the best opportunity of being reunited with its owners at the Home.
“I’m terrible like that, I like to rescue lost or injured animals,” said Jessie happily.
While at the Home, Jessie and her four-year-old son thought they would also have a look at the dogs available for adoption and that’s when they saw Rhett – a ten-year-old Pomeranian cross.
“When I was little, my Mum took us to adopt a dog, and we ended up getting the dog that was the most well-behaved, sitting on its bed. That’s exactly what Rhett was doing and he just looked so sweet,” said Jessie.
Rhett stole Jessie’s heart that afternoon so Jessie and her son went home, thought about him all night then jumped on www.dogshome.com in the morning to see if he was still available. He was, so Jessie went back into the Home, had a cuddle and “That was it,” said Jessie.
Jessie has another dog, cat and rabbit. Arriving at this menagerie of sorts may have been a somewhat daunting experience for any other dog, but Rhett adapted perfectly according to Jessie.
“Rhett was adapted fantastically, said Jessie.
“I’m actually quite surprised and how seamlessly he has managed to adjust to us in the first few months. He was a bit ‘stand-off-ish’ with the cat for the first few days as he was quite interested by her, but now they’re all fine”.
Rhett is ten-years-old, one of the reasons Jessie had to adopt him.
“Dogs deserve better than spending their last years in a cage, so I wanted to let him live what he has left in the lap of luxury,” said Jessie.
The Lost Dogs’ Home always has dogs like Rhett needing a loving home. You can view dogs and cats available for adoption by viewing our website.
