The Home supports Yarra Council’s plan to help the elderly keep their pets.
Yarra Council has approved plans to help elderly, frail or disabled residents look after their pets longer through the provision of in-home volunteer support. Under the new scheme, volunteers will visit senior residents’ homes to help them feed, clean and exercise their pets.
The Lost Dogs’ Home fully supports this initiative and encourages more councils to introduce such a program.
“The elderly and socially isolated should be supported to keep their pets for as long as possible. Pets provide companionship, security and a great deal of joy for people in their twilight years,” said Sue Conroy, Operations Manager at The Lost Dogs’ Home.
The Lost Dogs’ Home has been matching appropriate pets to elderly and disabled citizens for decades. The Home helped ‘Amy’ and Patricia Hardy of North Fitzroy find each other, as featured in the Melbourne Leader.
