Another month of record adoptions at The Lost Dogs’ Home
The Lost Dogs’ Home experienced record adoption rates in February 2010. Up 84% on the same time last year, staff are thrilled to see so many dogs welcomed into new and loving homes.
A total of 166 dogs were adopted in the shorter month of February. Combined with the record number of 220 in January, 386 dogs so far have been given a positive new start in 2010.
Generous donations to ‘Buckley’s Friends in Need Fund’ helped many of the 166 dogs adopted in February. Established to fund required surgery on unclaimed strays or treatment for health or physical problems, the Fund has so far resulted in a total of 75 surgeries.
Examples of the surgeries completed - which have corrected serious impairments - include nine hernia repairs, major dental work with teeth needing to be removed (14 in total), a cherry eye repair, grass seed removal and treatment in four dogs and patella surgery.
Eye removal, excision arthroplasty and a toe amputation have also been accomplished.
A big thank you to all our donors and supporters who have helped make this possible for the animals.
Extended opening hours at Gracie Street, publicity and an improvement in the economic climate have all contributed to the increased adoption rates in 2010.
“The public are demonstrating that they have great confidence in our dogs for adoption.” says Managing Director, Dr Graeme Smith.
The Home continues to urge anyone considering welcoming a pet into their home to adopt from a shelter where pets are health and temperament tested and they have been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
Snoopy the Maltese mix was just one of the dogs who benefited from ‘Buckley’s Friends in Need Fund’ in February, after he was attacked by another dog, resulting in severe muscle damage which required Veterinary treatment and care. He is now in a happy, loving home and has made a full recovery.
Dogs from the Home cost $275 and puppies are $290. The adoption price also includes a free lesson with Planet K9 training to help dog and owner get off to the best possible start. Visit www.dogshome.com to view all dogs and cats for adoption.
