Buckley learns the ropes

Now in much better health and spirits, Buckley is starting puppy training with his foster carer.

With his nip-and-tuck surgery behind him and in much better health and spirits, Buckley, along with his foster carer Jodie, are now looking forward to the future, which includes gentle and basic puppy obedience training.

Jodie, a long-time staff member at The Lost Dogs' Home, is an experienced foster carer and is a qualified vet nurse with dog and puppy training qualifications, so she understands the requirements of young and ‘special needs’ dogs.

“Buckley’s now nine weeks old, which is usually the time when puppy preschool begins for pups. Obviously he has had a horrific start to life, but he now needs guidance in order to become a confident adult dog,” said Jodie.

With much of the media flurry surrounding him now easing, Buckley was able to spend time with Jodie enjoying some basic training yesterday. All media visits took place during Buckley's toilet breaks and play time.

“Today is the first time we have been able to put a lead on him and he responded well. Like any puppy, he is very inquisitive and loves playing – shoelaces and sticks are not safe around him! The next stage is teaching him the basic ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘drop’ commands.”

Buckley is now enjoying some rest and relaxation at home with Jodie and her older dog, “It’s important that he learns to interact with different people, in varied situations, and also learns good canine manners.”

“He shows a lot of potential and is eager to learn and please. I’m amazed at how his confidence has grown since he first arrived.”
