Barney: Barney beats cancer with help from the Clinic

Barney is 15-years-old and still just as keen about chasing sticks as he was when he was a pup. But he's no ordinary 15-year-old dog; Barney beat an aggressive bout of malignant cancer at age 13 and has since made a full recovery!

At age 13, it was discovered Barney had an aggressive tumour inside his head - a ‘malignant squamous cell carcinoma'. The tumor was very dangerous and needed removal immediately.

Due to the large size of Barney's tumor, the lack of spare skin on top of his head and the need to ensure no cancer cells were left, a very large incision was made resulting in a significant amount of skin being removed. This left very little healthy skin on Barney's head. A pedicle flap had to be performed; a procedure which involves replacing the missing skin from the head with spare skin from the neck. This complex and life-saving surgery was performed by Lost Dogs' Home Veterinarian Dr Alan Bolton.

The surgery was a great success and Barney was sent home with pain relief and antibiotics. He has made a full recovery.
Barney now lives in Brisbane with his loving owners who take him camping, swimming in the local creek and for long rides in his special canine cart. His owner does all the pushing while he sits back and enjoys the scenery!

Barney is an example of a dog which has lived a long and happy life owing to lots of care and attention from his owners.  Barney's longevity is also a result of expert veterinary care administered by top vets like Dr Bolton and the Team at The Lost Dogs' Home Veterinary Clinic. Barney's owners will be "forever grateful to The Lost Dogs' Home Veterinary Team who created a miracle for Barney in the form of a few more years of precious life".
