Terrier mix Milo was found wandering on a busy road in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Collected by the Home’s Animal Ambulance, Milo was brought to the safety of the Home.

Scanned for a microchip on his arrival, staff were thrilled to discover he was chipped and set about contacting his owner.

Instead of reacting positively to the good news that her dog was safe and well, Milo’s owner said that, as he’d been missing for two months and her children had stopped asking about him, she didn’t want to take him back.

Just over twelve-months ago Jan and her family lost their beloved dog Jasper. It was the first time in their life that they had been without a pet. In Jan’s words it was “a very weird feeling”.

After some consideration Jan and her two girls decided for their busy family, a cat may be easier to care for and so they began researching the options available.

They first looked at some Ragdoll kittens but soon decided they were far too expensive, especially when they discovered there were so many lovely cats available at shelters.

Staff at the Home have seen some very distressing and sad sights in their days but none had ever seen a dog in Astro Boy’s condition.

With no back paw, just protruding bone, Astro Boy would have suffered extreme and unthinkable pain.

This was an old injury he’d had sustained, most likely from being hit by a car,” said Dr Alan Bolton.

There is nothing better than that special friendship that exists between a boy and his dog. Mat and his dog Spike, whom he adopted from The Lost Dogs’ Home, share such a bond.

As an only child, Mat’s father Robert thought that a dog would make a good companion for his son and he admits, also motivate him from spending less time “occupied by computer games and screen-based activities”.

Traditionally the unluckiest day on the calendar, this Friday the 13th The Lost Dogs’ Home wants to dispel the myth that black cats bring bad luck.

Often black cats and dogs take longer to rehome,” says General Manager Sue Conroy.

For some reason black dogs and cats don’t have the same appeal as other animals, no matter how friendly they are.”
