And they’re (half) off! – Brisbane shelter offers discount adoptions on Cup Day

When the horses race around the track at the Melbourne Cup tomorrow, The Lost Dogs’ Home is hoping residents of Brisbane will race into the Warra shelter to adopt one of our wonderful cats and dogs.

At the time of writing, 30 dogs and 13 cats are currently looking for loving new homes, and to give them their best chance, the Home is offering 50 per cent off the cost of adoption for tomorrow only!

We are new to the Brisbane area and want to start promoting the benefits of adoption to the public,” said Managing Director Dr Graeme Smith OAM. “We are hoping to give prospective pet owners an incentive to visit a shelter first, rather than going down the breeder path.”

Wanting to safeguard against impulse purchases – which often results in the animal being returned to the shelter or discarded – it is compulsory for those wanting to take advantage of the discount to first complete the Home’s Pet Licence test.

The Pet Licence test prompts people to think about all the responsibilities they are about to take on when adopting a pet,” Graeme said. “It consists of 25 questions and you can complete it as many times as you need to pass… we don’t want to discourage adoption but rather give people all the information they need to make the right decision.”

With questions focusing on the costs associated with owning a pet, as well as the necessary commitments to obedience training, veterinary care, grooming and socialisation, the Home hopes to educate members of the public on responsible pet ownership before they adopt, thus eradicating the number of dumped, lost, mistreated or surrendered animals we see every day.

It’s important people see this more as the incentive they needed to adopt, rather than trying to ‘save a quick buck’ on a pet they don’t really want or aren’t ready for,” Graeme said.

There are cats and dogs of all sizes, ages and temperaments just waiting for a loving new place to call home, so to see who could be your new family member, visit our adoptions page. Computer stations will be set up at the shelter for owners to complete the Pet Licence test; however to avoid queues complete the Pet Licence test now by clicking here.

Opening hours are 9am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 9am – 3.30pm on Saturdays and 9am to noon on Sunday. All dogs and puppies cost $304 and all cats and kittens are $144.
