Country dog Elke finds a loving, new home in the city

Beautiful Staghound cross Elke was one of many cats and dogs looking for a new home in The Lost Dogs’ Home’s Echuca Shelter.

In what seems to be an increasing trend, this lovely pup was spied on The Lost Dogs’ Home’s adoption web page by Melbournian Laura who lives three hours drive away.

For Laura it was love at first sight and she thought nothing of having to make the long trek up to Echuca. “I called ahead and explained to the shelter where we were coming from – St. Kilda – and to find out as much about Elke as we could before we set-out to take her home,” said Laura.

When Laura and her partner droveup to Echuca to meet Elke and – with their fingers crossed – adopt her, they had a good feeling.

My sister lives in Woodend, which is sort of on the way, so we stopped by and picked up her shelter dog, Scooter to keep us company and with the hopes that if we adopt Elke, she could get to know her cousin,” explained Laura.

Scooter was adopted from The Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne a few years ago, so she felt a bit of emotional support from a fellow adoptee was a good idea.

Upon meeting Elke there was no doubt that she was the dog for Laura and her partner. “She’s a beautiful girl, a brilliant dog and an amazing animal” says Laura.

Elke has taken to Laura’s lifestyle fabulously and developed a strong bond with both Laura and her partner Jesse. Constant St. Kilda beach walks and walks in Alma Street park make sure Elke is well-socialised and taken care of and shows the love both Laura and her partner have for their new companion.

Laura is also amazed at how well behaved Elke is. She reports that “Elke doesn’t really chew on anything she is not supposed to, has mastered recall, sleeps right through the night and waits until I get up to take her to the park each morning. Although there were a couple of days when I didn’t want to get up so early and Elke went to the side of the bed and licked my face”!

Laura says that as Elke “loves cuddles and everyone loves cuddles from her”, she has earned the nickname “Smooch”.

One of Elke’s favourite things to do is to steal socks and shoes and take them to her beanbag to sleep with, she especially like’s Laura’s partner’s Jesse’s socks as they apparently smell the best!

Elke is just one of the many wonderful dogs adopted from the Home’s shelter in Echuca. While there are many dogs and cats in need of loving, new homes at the Home’s North Melbourne Shelter, Echuca Shelter Manager Kate Kemp suggests that prospective new owners also consider visiting the historic river town of Echuca to adopt a deserving dog or cat.

All dogs and cats are desexed, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and health checked. Dogs are heartworm tested, while cats are FIV tested. Please visit our adoptions page to see the dogs and cats available for adoption from all our shelters.
